The Brits 2017 Round-Up | EGO

Last night Brits fever took hold of the nation for approximately two and a half hours on itv1. Whilst the guest-list was never going to rival the Grammys for A-list we were treated to a decent roster of performances at London’s 02 arena from Bruno Mars to Skepta, and everything in between. Although you often have to take the awards with a pinch (or five) of salt, mainly due to its widely predictable winners which often don’t truly reflect Britain's diverse musical landscape, this year still brought some killa’ performances and some epic talking points that of course sent Twitter into meltdown.

Little Mix Brits 2017

-

Little Mix opened the show with everyone’s fave break-up anthem "Shout Out To My Ex", even if I personally prefer much choicer words for any ex of mine, the girls stormed the stage complete with matching silver bodysuits, black thigh high boots and legions of foil-clad backing dancers.

They later went on to win their first ever Brit award for British Single, again for "Shout Out To My Ex", which was the ultimate ‘boy bye’ moment with Perrie beating ex-fiance Zayn. Accepting the award the girls thanked their exes, with Jade saying “this one’s for you lads” (lol see ya Zayn).

 -

Emeli Sande won Best British Female, which is lovely for her but also a bit of a cop-out seeing as Adele hadn’t even been nominated. I mean I guess sometimes you’ve got to give other people a chance but hello. She did make up for it with a powerful stripped back performance of "Hurts".

 -

Bruno Mars looked effortlessly suave as usual, performing his new single "That’s What I Like” complete with flawless end bridge that gave us shivers.

-

The 1975, after winning the British Group award, performed their new song "The Sound", which got everyone talking when flash images of negative comments about the band were displayed on screen leading Twitter to start speculating had the Brits been hacked????!!! This actually wasn’t the case, with the boys actually displaying quotes from the band’s critics, serving as a massive ‘F-you’ to the haters, as well as trolling everyone watching. Fair play boys.

But two of the stand-out performances of the night came from Skepta with "Shut Down" and Ed Sheeran’s performance of "Shape Of You" featuring special guest Stormzy.

Skepta Brits 2017

-

Skepta’s song choice was poignant as it samples a woman’s reaction to Kanye West’s performance of "All Day" back in 2015, which Skepta had featured in alongside other British grime artists, where she laments there were “a bunch of young men all dressed in black dancing extremely aggressively on stage, it made me feel so intimidated”. Taking to the stage completely on his own, with no elaborate staging and dressed in just a hoodie and jeans, the sample rang out loud and clear across the arena during his set.

-

Ed Sheeran was rolling on the success of his two new singles, dropped on the same day last month, performing both "Castle On The Hill" and "Shape Of You", where Stormzy took to the stage and immediately gave the mega-hit a fresh spin that will undoubtedly soar straight to the top of the charts.

But it was the lack of recognition for two men who have helped put grime on the map internationally, attracting the attention of huge artists such as Kanye and Drake, but failing to win any of the four awards they were nominated for, that dampened the night somewhat, even if it was sadly unsurprising given the awards track record.

-

Although David Bowie’s passing was marked at last year’s ceremony with him being posthumously awarded the Brits Icon award, his presence was still felt this year. Bowie deservedly won both British Male Solo Artist and British Album for Blackstar, with the latter picked up by his son Duncan Jones who dedicated the award to “all the kooks”, saying that his dad had “always been there supporting people who think they are a little weird or a little bit strange”. </3

 -

The tribute to the late George Michael began with an emotive speech by his Wham! bandmates and a performance by Chris Martin of "A Different Corner", against a backdrop of archive footage of George, utilised to perfection to create the illusion of the two duetting together. The minimal setting and harmonising vocals was a perfect tribute to a legend whose death we are still not over.

Katy Perry took to the stage to perform new single "Chained To The Rhythm" alongside Skip Marley and an army of backing dancers dressed as miniature, glowing houses.

-

No amount of guilt is ever going to stop the human race from laughing at someone falling over, especially when the ill-fated individual falls whilst blindly tottering around the stage dressed as a little house. Taking over from the Left Shark as iconic K Pez performer, this little house could probably be used as a metaphor for something more powerful but for now we’re just rewatching gifs of him/her plummeting onto a table. I mean it wasn’t quite Madonna-being-dragged-back-by-her-own-cape standards but we appreciated it none the same. Little house if you’re out there somewhere, we send our best wishes.

And of course top marks for the skeletal effigies of Donald Trump and Theresa May which really captured the hope and vitality they emanate on a daily basis.

-

One Direction won British Video for "History", which feels like a ridiculously old song to be recognised in 2017, but in a category voted for during the show solely by twitter hashtag you’d always expect the directioners to come through. Their love will never wane.

-

The international winners were brushed over pretty quickly, mainly because none of them turned up, but we were treated to Drake accepting International Male via video looking fineeeeeee - it was short and sweet but always worth it.

-

Drake

-

Queen Bey won International Female and A Tribe Called Quest won International Group.

-

And of course there was Robbie Williams - who somewhat randomly won the 2017 Icon award but whatever we’ll roll with it.

-

All in all it was a good show with some great performances showing off some off Britian's biggest talents. The voting academy are tentatively moving in the right direction with more diverse nominees, but the fact that the artists with the most impact in the past year left empty handed, shows there's still a long way to go.

-

Until next year Brits....
