#EGOUNLOCKED: Madam X | EGO

If you ask anyone who the Queen of the underground scene in Manchester is, they’re going to say Madam X. The twenty-something DJ from Milton Keynes moved to Manchester for University and quickly got to grips with the city’s nightlife whilst other freshers were still finding their feet.

-

During her first year, she worked for the uni’s Fuse FM radio station and by second year was hosting her own show on Unity Radio. By third year, Madam X, otherwise known as Crissi, was getting called in for Radio 1Xtra, alongside whilst co-founding label & club night ‘BPM’ and graduating with a 2:1 in English Lit. No biggie.

-

Since then she’s made huge waves throughout the country, hosting nights at some major clubs, playing some huge festivals and even starting up her own record label, Kaizen. We caught up with the girlboss in question to see what she’s been up to lately...

Music, food, comedy & cats

-

How did you end up where you are in life right now?

-

By focusing on what I wanted to do & working for it!

-

-

What’s been your proudest moment to date?

-

DJing all over the world. It's actually mad where my music's taken me. Never in a million years did I think I'd be playing a festival in Cuba, or going on tour in India and China etc etc. I'm so fortunate to be doing what I love as a career, and I think just working for myself, being independent and not compromising my sound to do so has been my proudest achievement.

-

Who or what would you cite as your biggest inspiration?

-

My friends and peers. Living in Manchester for 5 years sculpted me into the DJ I am today. The talent up north is incredible & if I didn't have people like Chunky or Jonny Dub or the BPM lot around, my journey might've gone very differently!

-

-

You’ve got your own record label, tell us about it!

-

Kaizen - it means "continual improvement" in Japanese because we're constantly moving! It's very small, very niche but we're a family and we love the sound we're pushing and the music we release. All the artists were favourites of mine before I signed them, so having Biome, Walton and Silas & Snare on board the project was amazing for me!

It's hard to explain our style, but Mixmag said something which really resonated which was "Shady and sinister, they're on a strictly hoods-up, heads-down tip. Think moody dubstep with the addition of some subtle percussive seasoning and you're there," - and I will probably continue to use this blurb until they write another one

-

 -

Who would be your dream person to sign to Kaizen?

-

Pearson Sound

-

What’s on your playlist right now?

-

I've just been listening to loads of podcasts. I'm really into Terry Juarez's shows on Radar. They're like the ultimate soundtrack to anything & his knowledge of world music is incredible. You could be cooking, cleaning your yard, having an afterparty with your mates & the show's sit perfectly in the background.

When it comes to stuff I listen to at home, I like to listen to DJ's who play completely different music to me. I like to get educated. People like Alexander Nut, Jonny Dub, Josey Rebelle - they do their own thing and they do it well.

-

-

Describe your style in three words…

-

Comfy and Casual

-

If you could host a night with any 3 artists, dead or alive, who would you pick?

-

Ben UFO

Michael Jackson

Terry Wogan - Mic Controller

...Random but we could make it work

-

-

What’s on your rider?

-

Vodka, apple juice & Pokemon cards

-

Tell us a random fact about yourself…

-

I got stabbed by a door handle

-

-

If you were a mood ring, what colour would you be?

-

Pink, White & Black - KAIZEN

-

Who’s your ultimate style icon?

-

The Spice Girls

Most days I'm Sporty but if I'm feeling to dress up a bit, we might try Posh & then I'll leave the house and notice I'm still in my Air Max and some form of tracksuit…

-

-

What’s your guilty pleasure?

-

Daytime TV Quiz shows. Richard from 'Pointless' was stood 2 metres away from me at Comic Relief & I lost my shit

-

What have you got planned for 2017 & what are you most looking forward to?

-

Quite a few bits! I'm putting on more record label nights, working on the next releases set to come out, about to start filming Season 2 of Four to The Floor on Channel 4 which I'm seriously looking forward to & I'm gonna be making my US debut this summer in LA! Just looking to keep it moving & have a good time!
