7 Ways to Survive Freshers Week

Ready for Freshers Week? We’ve got the ultimate guide to help you survive (and thrive) through the chaos, make new friends, and rock that fancy dress party like a pro. From figuring out how many VKs your budget can handle to tackling laundry for the first time, Freshers Week might seem overwhelming—but we’ve got your back with all the Freshers tips we wish we had as first years.

1.Work out a budget

Let’s be real, sticking to a budget during Freshers Week is a challenge, but it’s worth a shot. Start on the right foot so you’re not begging your parents for cash before Christmas. Sure, Freshers expenses go beyond vodka and McDonald’s (who knew?), so set aside some cash for textbooks, bus passes, and, you know, actual essentials. Your maintenance loan might take a minute to hit your account, so stash a little extra for those surprise costs.

2. Be yourself

Thinking of a uni makeover? Think again. The best way to find your tribe is by being your true self on Freshers Week. Sure, delete those cringey high school selfies, but don’t try to be someone you’re not. Authenticity attracts lifelong friends who love you just the way you are—awkward dance moves and all.

3. Sign up to clubs

The Freshers’ Fair might seem a bit much, but trust us, it’s where you’ll find your people. From football to obscure societies like the Cat Puzzle Club (yes, it’s a thing), there’s something for everyone. Joining a club is one of the easiest ways to meet new mates who share your interests and help you settle into uni life.

4. Do your admin early on (AND GO TO CLASS)

After a week of no sleep and too much WKD, admin will be the last thing on your mind. Get the boring stuff sorted early—like council tax exemption, TV license, and registering with a doctor—so you can fully enjoy Freshers Week. And don’t skip those first classes! Making a good impression on your lecturers and classmates now will pay off later. Don’t be that person who only shows up before exams.

5. Don’t get too drunk or go to every single event

You don’t want to throw up all over yourself in front of people you can’t avoid for the next three years, nor do you want too drunk and get involved romantically (we worded that nicely) with someone you have to share accommodation with. Basically, have fun but stay smart. You also might think you’ll get FOMO if you miss out on a night of partying but you’ve got 3 full years to let your hair down, don’t overdo it in one week. In reality, you’ll get to know your flatmates better sharing treats and gossiping about the night before (your wallet and liver will also thank you).

6. Combating homesickness (and actual sickness)

Missing home? You’re not alone. Everyone feels it, but it gets easier. Keep your door open after you move in—this simple move makes you more approachable and can lead to quick friendships. And load up on Vitamin C to dodge Fresher’s Flu, because being sick and homesick is a combo no one needs.

7. Use that student discount

It’s amazing what you can get student discount on and trust us you’ll miss it when it’s gone. Get your hands on some real bargains and even some freebies! It’s always worth asking shops or restaurants if they have student discounts and make sure you sign upto websites such as UNIdays and Studentbeans. At the end of the day who doesn’t love saving money?

Make sure you utilise that student discount on our NEW IN and get an extra 20% off everything onsite.
